SurfShark Data Encryption

Whenever we look at a VPN for review, one of the main things we look at is their level of data encryption. While AES-256-bit encryption is the industry standard, there are different cipher levels. SurfShark uses one of the most secure ciphers known as Galois/Counter mode or GCM for sort. A person could spend a lot of time digging into how ciphers work, and how they impact the speed of your VPN. However, the long and short of it is, SurfShark removes the guesswork for you and provides the strongest data encryption as a default. Now, if you are the type of person who prefers to have full control over their connection and encryption, you may want to look elsewhere.

SurfShark: Netflix and Torrenting

Of course, the use of VPN services goes beyond simply masking your IP for the sake of privacy. While privacy is critical, so too is unrestricted access to the internet. For example, streaming services such as Netflix geo-lock their content to prevent access to their content. Also, your internet service provider may block certain P2P sites and connections, which restricts your access to the internet. SurfShark allows you to connect to the internet anonymously, from a server location of your choosing. Since SurfShark follows a strict no-log policy, your internet usage is your business and yours alone. In short, yes, SurfShark works for both streaming your favorite media, as well as connection to P2P sites and software.

SurfShark VPN Speed Test

When we do our speed test, I usually test the server closest to our office, as this should result in some of the highest speeds, and lowest ping. However, with SurfShark, we had to test a few servers in our country to find an average. Our internet connection gives us an average of 281Mbps download, 20 Mbps upload with 13ms Ping and 0.6ms Jitter.
When testing SurfShark, were able to find a stable average of 210 Mbps download, 18 Mbps upload with 68ms Ping and 0.6ms jitter.

This result shows a 25% decrease in download speed and a 10% decrease in upload speed.  Of course, the ping went way up increasing by 430%.

Ease of use

As you would expect, SurfShark is very easy to use. Once you download the appropriate version for your operating system, the installation takes less than a minute. Since the VPN is optimized as a default, there is no need for additional configuration. There are, however, some features that you may want to explore once you are familiar with the service. The best advice we can give you is to check out SurfSharks help section for any question or troubles you may have. All in all, SurfShark get a thumbs up for ease of use.

Support and Customer Service

Although SurfShark is extremely easy to set up and use, there may come a time where you need a little extra help with something. Most questions are easily answered in the Helps section of SurfShark’s website. There you will find details on application setup, account and billing inquiries, and more. If you have a specific question or concern and cannot find the answer in the help menu, SurfShark provides a 24/7 live chat feature. You can also submit a support ticket in the help section as well if needed.

The Bottom Line

In summary, SurfShark provides all the protection you need at a very reasonable price. However, if you like to have more control and options, SurfShark lacks the possibilities for more granular tuning. We were happy with our speed test results, although you may need to try a few different servers, and countries to find a reasonable speed. We give SurfShark a rating of 4/5.
